The Plaza Santa Maria is located at the base of a mixed-use, office-retail complex, within the Santa Maria Business District of Panama City. The plaza is created through variations in topography, transitioning from the street to ground retail by the layering of planes.
The proximity of changes in grade, generates opportunities for a variety of program and circulation is reinforced by materiality and scale. Landscape elements are interwoven throughout the terraces unifying the upper an lower tiers.
Within a formal frame lies a tapestry of landscape elements. The pattern creates an interesting arrangement of texture and color that appeals from multiple vantage points including the offices above. The plaza is vertically displaced by a grand stair creating a welcoming arrival at the street level and an elevated deck for social gatherings. Stairs are articulated to accommodate seating at a variety of capacities.
